Aisai Market

Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays start with Aisai Market.

A group of local farmers run this tiny morning market three days a week. It’s small, but big for me who don’t have a garden yet. Bags of potatoes, sweet potatoes, carrots, big daikons, radishes, Chinese cabbages, various seaweed, citrus fruits, and preserved vegetables are sold for 100 yen, or 200 yen at the most. There are also mochi (rice cakes) and ornaments made with pine branches, which reminds me that the new year is nearing. It’s a self checkout system, each box has a money jar (instant coffee jars are predominant, their plastic lids are supposedly easy to cut out a coin hole) at the corner where you put coins. Farmers sit by the wall, gossiping, exchanging garden tips and recipes, or helping the shoppers. It starts at 7am, but if you go there later than 7:20 most things are gone. Late fall mornings are chilly and I have a hard time getting out of the bed, but It’s a lot of fun especially when you make a great find like bags of peanuts. Out of the market hut, the sun rises from the mountains of Nozaki island and I think it’s the best way to start a day.
